Launch of Roushan Basti Project at Arsh Mahal, Kishanbagh

Human Welfare Foundation Telangana and AP Chapter strives to transform the social development landscape of the country with focus on education, health, economic, upliftment, women empowerment and disaster management. Its mission is to serve the humanity by providing the equal access to food, health, education and shelter and all other basic necessities that equip individuals to become an equal partner in the progress of the nation. It will therefore aim at reaching the grassroots with distinct preference for the depressed and the disadvantaged sections and will enable them to attain all that a common citizen cherishes. It will free the society from hunger, ignorance, deprivation and exploitation.

The census of 2011 reported that around 22.7 lakh (32.7%) of Hyderabad city’s population resides in 5.07 lakh slum households. In other words, one in three people in Hyderabad is a slum dweller. If compared with the previous census, this is a shocking increase of 264% in the slum population. These 1504 slums (increased from 1476 in 3 years) covers 12% of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area and point towards a sad reality that the city has not left any housing options for the poor except the slums leaving them deprived of all benefits of the so-called ‘development’.

Human Welfare Foundation AP & TS recognizes this problem of enormous proportions and is determined to address it. ‘Roushan Basti’ is an initiative in this direction through which HWF endeavors to bring light of knowledge, prosperity, empathy and morality in the dark alleys of Arshmahal slum, at Kishan Bagh,Hyderabad. This locality is one of the riot affected slums of the city. This project is the first milestone of the journey to bring light to all the slums of the city.

The Roushan Basti project was formally launched on Sun, 13th March 2016.

Some of the key initiatives of the project are:

  • Intensive door to door survey to assess the status of households, education, health & livelihood.
  • Build mechanism to improve access to education for students and address challenges that causes drop-outs and bad results.
  • Enable the adults to earn an income which can fulfill the basic needs of their family efficiently.
  • Build mechanism to improve access to health facilities.
  • Build and promote a healthy, hygienic and disease-free environment.
  • Build an environment of communal harmony, tolerance and respect among all sections of society.

HWF team has done an extensive survey of nearly 460 households at Arsh Mahal and has prepared a survey report on type of houses, basic amenities, age and gender breakdown of the population there, marital status, literacy, school dropout data, occupation data, neonatal health, immunization, chronic disease details, disability cases, bank accounts, loan status & Adhar card availability, Voter ID and DOB Certificate availability, senior citizen and scholarship status.

HWF has decided its approach to be divided in three phases:
